Workshop Sessions

This year's Get Into College! Conference will host a number of informative and helpful sessions conducted by leaders in the field of college preparation and admissions consulting.
KEYNOTE PRESENTATION (12:15 PM – 1:00 PM)

(12:15 PM, Gindi Auditorium, 3rd Floor)

The 17th Annual Get Into College! Conference and College Fair is pleased to host three admissions and outreach professionals from outstanding universities to discuss issues of college admissions. Participating in the panel are Jill Gully, Regional Director of Admissions, George Washington University; Becky Chassin, Associate Director of Undergraduate Admissions, University of Southern California; and Bank Chantaruchirakorn, Student Affairs Officer of the Recruitment Unit at UCLA. After a moderated discussion of admissions and related issues, there will be a Q&A session for members of the audience.

SESSION I WORKSHOPS (1:20 – 2:10 PM)

The SAT and the ACT: What’s the Difference? (Gindi Dining Center, 2nd Floor)
What is the difference between the SAT and ACT? They’re both standardized tests and they both factor into the college admissions process. This session aims to help participants learn about the differences between the two tests and how they compare.

Financing Your College Education (Spiegel West, 3rd Floor)
College isn’t cheap, but that doesn’t mean you can’t afford it. This session will serve as an overview to the financial aid process as well as present ways to plan financially for college.

The college application process is full of essays. How should you approach writing an essay for your application? What impresses those who read the essays? What things should you never put in your essays? How can you make your essay really stand out?

So you’re a new student on campus… You want to get involved in the campus Jewish community, but aren’t sure how. What organizations are available? What kinds of activities are you likely to find? Where can I find kosher food or Shabbat services? Why should I get involved? This session offers different views of current and former Hillel staff members about their own college experiences.

There are many options available for extended experiences in Israel after high school. Learn about many of them, and hear about scholarship opportunities available to students from Los Angeles. The workshop will focus mostly on long-term (5 months or longer) programs.

“What will I do when I grow up?” This is a question that we face throughout our lives.
College is a great time to build your skills and experiences to make you marketable for employment or graduate school, and it is never too early to start planning for your future. Participate in a fun, group activity to begin exploring your interests and what majors, internships, and careers that could be a part of your future. You will also find out about strategies to learn more about yourself and the world of work.

Participants in this workshop will explore the various opportunities offered by colleges to learning disabled students and the differences between college and high school programs and services. Conversation will also include identifying the right college environment for your learning needs.
